It seems to me that the laws and regulations on the books at present do more to protect the industry than the consumer. Of course, those that support the current system say that regulations will hamper their ability to make a profit and could cause them to have to lay-off workers or raise the price of food. Workers losing jobs and food prices going higher and higher hurt everyone. They would also argue that consumers would be unnecessarily frightened by labels that list certain things that haven’t been proven to be harmful, which would hurt sales.
