Controlled by the Media

Even if people don’t like to admit it, the media has a major impact on every decision they make. It’s hard to think that just about every choice a person makes is controlled by an outside source. The media influences some of the decisions people make everyday such…

I agree with you. The media has a huge influence on the decisions we make. How much of an influence is obviously up for debate. I know that I make decisions everyday based on the media’s influence and my culture’s. I also know that my culture has changed in part because of the influence of media. Look at how tightly controlled the media is in countries that don’t have a free press. It’s all about controlling the message. You bring up how the media shows us the ideal—what we are supposed to be and want. You are right, which is why so many civil rights groups watch the media closely. Since the civil rights act 1964, the media has been forced to be less racist in their message and show African Americans in a more positive light. It has worked, and we know live in a much less overtly racist country. In my on experience, I used to want a two-story house. Why? Well, when I was growing up, the tv (and movies) showed me family after family who lived in a two-story house on a tree-lined street complete with sidewalks. I have never lived in such a neighborhood, but the media told me I was supposed to. So, what happens if you are a part of a group who is never represented in the media, or when a person from your group is on tv, he/she is being arrested?
